Suspect Arrested in Hit-and-Run Death of TDOT Contract Worker on I-40

Metro Nashville Police have announced the arrest of a suspect in connection with the tragic death of a TDOT contract worker earlier this month. According to investigators, 24-year-old Jalen Maurice Gray has been taken into custody and charged with criminal homicide. The victim, 25-year-old Joel H. Watkins Jr., had been working along the shoulder of I-40 East near Charlotte Pike when he was struck and killed on July 14.

Police say Gray was driving a black Chevrolet Impala when the fatal incident occurred. After hitting Watkins, the vehicle left the scene, prompting a weeks-long investigation. Using a combination of surveillance footage, witness statements, and forensic evidence, detectives were able to identify the suspect and locate the vehicle believed to have been involved.

The arrest marks a significant development in a case that has deeply affected Watkins’ family, coworkers, and the wider Nashville community. TDOT officials previously spoke out about the risks faced by road workers every day and the critical importance of driver caution in construction and work zones. Watkins, described as a dedicated young man with a promising future, lost his life while performing essential work to keep Tennessee’s roads safe.

As Gray awaits court proceedings, authorities have reiterated calls for drivers to remain alert and responsible behind the wheel, especially near work areas. The investigation remains ongoing, and police continue to encourage anyone with additional information to come forward. Meanwhile, Watkins’ loved ones hope that the arrest brings some measure of accountability as they mourn his untimely loss.
