Streets Aren’t Mario Kart: Police Tell Tennesseans to Keep Golf Carts Off Roads

Hendersonville police are urging residents to refrain from driving golf carts on public roads, citing safety concerns and legal restrictions. The department has received numerous complaints about unlicensed juveniles operating golf carts recklessly, sometimes at high speeds, leading to near-miss accidents. In response, officers have increased patrols in affected neighborhoods and are emphasizing the importance of road safety.

Under Tennessee law, traditional golf carts are not street-legal unless modified to meet specific safety standards. These modifications include features such as headlights, turn signals, and seat belts, and the vehicle must be registered as a low-speed vehicle (LSV). Even then, LSVs can only be operated on roads with speed limits of 35 mph or less, and drivers must possess a valid driver’s license.

The Hendersonville Police Department is committed to ensuring the safety of all road users and will continue to monitor and enforce compliance with these laws. Residents are encouraged to report any violations to local authorities.
