A Tennessee mother who traveled across state lines to meet someone she had only known through online gaming is now dead, and investigators in Ohio are still searching for answers.
Amber Graham, 37, of Spring Hill, left home on June 14 with her 8-year-old daughter and drove to Cleveland, Ohio. She was going to meet a man in person for the first time after the two had built a relationship playing Xbox together online. Family and friends tried to talk her out of the trip, worried about her safety, but she made the drive anyway.
Her mother grew alarmed days later when she stopped hearing from Amber and her granddaughter. On June 18, she reported them missing to the Spring Hill Police Department. Officers reached Amber that same day, and she told them she was fine and would call her mother back. At that point, police had no reason to believe either of them was in danger.
But the silence that followed worried the people closest to her. Amber was due back at work and never showed. Instead, she called her best friend, who was also her manager, to quit her job. During that call, a man got on the line and began yelling. Her friend described him as visibly agitated, and that call turned out to be the last time she heard Amber’s voice.
More than two weeks after Amber left Tennessee, her daughter was found on July 1 walking alone along an Ohio roadway. The girl had her grandmother’s phone number written down and tucked in her pocket. Police were called immediately.
Friends who had been trying to track Amber down used the man’s gaming screen name to trace the address where she had reportedly been staying, then passed that information to authorities. When officers went to the home, they found Amber’s body outside, covered with a sheet.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner has not yet released a cause or manner of death, and Cleveland police say they have not classified the case as a homicide or ruled out criminal activity while the investigation continues. Amber’s daughter is currently in the custody of the State of Ohio.
The case has drawn attention online as another example of the risks that can come with meeting someone in person after building a relationship through gaming platforms or social media, particularly when it involves long distance travel and children.
This remains an active and developing investigation, and 615Nav will update this story as more information is released.
