An inmate has died at the Wayne County Jail in Tennessee, and authorities are investigating the fatality.  Correctional and medical staff responded to a medical call inside the facility, where they attempted life-saving measures while awaiting emergency services.

After those efforts failed, the inmate was transported to Wayne Medical Center for further treatment.  Despite medical intervention, the inmate passed away at the hospital.

Although the sheriff’s office is coordinating with local officials, they have said they suspect this to be a medical-related incident and do not believe foul play was involved.  The sheriff contacted the district attorney to launch a formal review of the circumstances surrounding the death.

The 22nd Judicial District Attorney has taken over the investigation.  At this stage, authorities have not released details about the inmate’s identity, medical history, or exact cause of death.
