Nashville leaders are working to expand access to child care as the city continues to face a shrinking supply of providers.

Local reports show the number of child care providers has fallen by about 15%, making it harder for families to find available spots for infants and young children. The shortage has created long waitlists in many areas and added pressure on working parents across Davidson County.

City officials say the issue is also impacting local businesses and the broader economy, as reliable child care is essential for workforce stability. In response, leaders are exploring ways to speed up licensing, ease regulations, and support the opening of new or expanded child care centers.

The overall goal is to increase capacity and make child care more accessible as Nashville’s population continues to grow.
