A woman visiting Nashville had a terrifying run-in on Shelby Avenue Tuesday morning when a man armed with a machete chased her down the street and demanded her belongings in broad daylight.

Metro Nashville Police say the incident happened around 9:45 a.m. on March 25, when a 26-year-old out-of-town visitor was walking along Shelby Avenue on her way to meet friends downtown. During the walk from her hotel, she noticed 31-year-old Fred Johnson beginning to follow her.
The situation quickly turned dangerous when Johnson began chasing her while wielding a machete. He caught up to her near 2nd Street and demanded her purse, wallet, and cowboy boots. The woman handed over her belongings and wasted no time calling police once she reached safety.
Thanks to her quick reporting and MNPD’s downtown camera network, officers were able to track Johnson down and take him into custody within 45 minutes of the robbery.
Johnson has a documented history of substance abuse and assault. At the time of the attack, he was already out on bond from a public intoxication arrest on March 15.
Following Tuesday’s robbery arrest, police also charged him in connection with a separate burglary at Lainey Wilson’s Bell Bottoms Up Bar, adding burglary, vandalism, and theft to his list of charges. He is currently being held on an $80,000 bond.
The incident has rattled other visitors in the area. Shanna Sirman, in town from Florida this week, said she and her group had not heard about the robbery but are now rethinking walking around alone.
“I know for sure I will definitely be staying with my group. I am not going to go anywhere by myself, especially as a woman,” Sirman said.
She added that if she were ever in the same situation, she would not hesitate to hand everything over. “If they were asking me anything, they can have it. It’s not worth my life to keep my cell phone or any money I have on me. They got it,” she said.
Nashville police credit the combination of fast victim reporting and the city’s surveillance infrastructure for the rapid arrest. No injuries were reported.
