Titans’ rookie QB under pressure as line struggles

Published on

The Tennessee Titans are still seeking their first win of the season after going 0-2. One of the biggest challenges they face has been protecting their quarterback. Rookie Cam Ward has been sacked 11 times over the first two games. Injuries along the offensive line have made it hard for the team to find any continuity. Head Coach Brian Callahan has said he wants to see more consistency in how the line plays together.

On Wednesday the Titans missed right tackle J.C. Latham and right guard Kevin Zeitler at practice. Latham has a hip injury that also kept him out of the home opener against the Rams. Zeitler started at right guard on Sunday but left that game after 14 snaps due to a bicep injury.

Depth has been tested on that right side of the line. Players such as Oli Udoh and John Ojukwu have taken reps as the team looks for workable options. The coaching staff has emphasized competition and performance from all the players available. Callahan said he feels good about the players who have played and believes in the depth they have. He also said that the team needs to play better.

Injuries are not limited to the offensive line. Nose tackle T’Vondre Sweat is still listed on the injury report with an ankle issue that kept him from playing against the Rams. He was limited in practice on Wednesday. With the divisional opener against the Indianapolis Colts coming, the Titans must find ways to manage these injuries while trying to protect their rookie quarterback and improve their offensive chemistry.
