South Nashville witnessed another series of traffic stops involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents late Monday night into early Tuesday morning, following a weekend operation that resulted in over 150 stops and an undisclosed number of detentions.
The recent stops occurred near Bell Road and Murfreesboro Pike, the same area targeted during the weekend’s “public safety operation” conducted jointly by the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), ICE, and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). Witnesses reported seeing unmarked patrol cars and a white transport van accompanying THP troopers. No detentions were observed during these latest stops.
ICE emphasized that its enforcement efforts are aimed at individuals who pose threats to public safety or national security. “Protecting the safety and security of our communities remains a top priority,” stated Mellissa Harper, ERO New Orleans Field Office Director. “Our officers are highly trained professionals who carry out their duties with diligence, respect, and integrity.”
However, the operations have raised concerns among local officials. Mayor Freddie O’Connell expressed that neither he nor the Metro Nashville Police Department were informed about the weekend operation and have requested the names of those detained.
State Representative Justin Jones also sought answers from the Department of Safety and Homeland Security. In a meeting with Commissioner Jeff Long, Jones inquired about the identities of those detained. Long responded that THP might not have that information, indicating that immigration detentions were handled separately by ICE.
The lack of transparency and communication has prompted immigrant rights groups to protest and demand accountability. As the situation develops, community members and officials continue to seek clarity on the scope and impact of these enforcement actions.
