MTSU fires dean over remarks on Charlie Kirk

Middle Tennessee State University has terminated an Assistant Dean after remarks she made online about the death of Charlie Kirk. The former administrator, Laura Sosh-Lightsy, initially posted about Kirk’s passing, writing “Looks like ol’ Charlie spoke his fate into existence” followed by “Hate begets hate. ZERO sympathy.” When she was met with criticism she defended her position adding “Yep. Hate begets hate. Still no sympathy. You get back what you put into the world tenfold.”

Her comments caught the attention of Senator Marsha Blackburn. Blackburn demanded that the university remove Sosh-Lightsy from her position.

In response MTSU President Sidney A. McPhee released a statement condemning Sosh-Lightsy’s remarks. He said they were inappropriate and callous regarding the tragic murder of Charlie Kirk, and that because she held a position of trust directly with students the comments were incompatible with the university’s values. He added that they had undermined the institution’s credibility and reputation with students, faculty, staff and the broader community.

McPhee confirmed that Sosh-Lightsy had been fired effective immediately. He also extended his deepest sympathies to the family of Charlie Kirk.
