A 30-year-old man has been arrested in Nashville after a series of violent carjackings and attempted carjackings on Thursday night. The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) responded to multiple incidents involving the suspect, Jerry Garcia, who allegedly assaulted victims to steal their vehicles.
The first incident occurred at an apartment complex on 2400 Charlotte Pike around 10:45 PM. A man was sitting in his Tesla when Garcia approached, opened the driver’s door, and punched him multiple times before forcibly removing him from the vehicle. However, the car was equipped with a security system linked to the victim’s phone, preventing Garcia from driving away.
Undeterred, Garcia then approached a Toyota Prius, physically assaulted the driver, and stole the vehicle. The Prius was later recovered unoccupied on 30th Avenue South.
A short time later, Garcia attempted another carjacking at a McDonald’s on West End Avenue. The victim reported that Garcia assaulted him before trying to take his vehicle. Garcia fled the scene on foot and was apprehended shortly thereafter.
Garcia was found walking near 21st Avenue South and Fairfax Avenue, where he was arrested. At the time of his arrest, Garcia appeared to be under the influence of drugs. He initially refused to identify himself and was booked into the Davidson County Jail under the alias “John Doe.”
Upon identification, Garcia was charged with one count of carjacking and two counts of attempted carjacking. He is currently being held on a $300,000 bond.
All three victims later identified Garcia as their attacker. The swift identification and arrest were made possible through victim cooperation and timely police response.
The MNPD commended the victims for their cooperation and the swift response of officers in apprehending the suspect. They reminded the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to help prevent such incidents. The department continues to investigate whether Garcia was involved in other carjackings or related crimes in the region.
