A 19-year-old Nashville woman, identified by police as Salondria Lado, has been charged with aggravated child abuse after authorities say a 14-month-old child suffered a skull fracture following being thrown.

The investigation began when the child’s grandmother alerted the Metro Nashville Police Department after receiving a video from the mother that showed her slapping and throwing the child. The mother also allegedly sent threatening messages to the child’s father.

When officers arrived at Lado’s apartment, she refused to open the door. Concerned for the child’s welfare, they entered and found Lado and the baby locked in a bathroom. Lado reportedly admitted to “spazzing out” after the baby soiled herself, and claimed she only slapped the child’s hand. But the video sent by the family appears to show much more: the mother hitting the baby’s stomach and legs while using curse words.

The child was hospitalized at Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s pediatric unit and doctors found a hemorrhage in the eye in addition to the skull fracture.

Lado is currently held on a $75,000 bond at the Downtown Detention Center and faces aggravated child abuse charges.
