Rutherford County is considering a new initiative to help students and their families learn English. The county school board is expected to review a plan this month that would introduce additional classes taught by ESL (English as a Second Language) assistants. The goal is to provide parents of students with opportunities to learn English and become more engaged in their children’s education.
Under the proposal, instructors would teach for two hours each week during the school year. These sessions would be offered at Smyrna Elementary and Smyrna Primary. The first semester of classes would last 12 weeks, followed by a second semester of 17 weeks.
Compensation for those teaching is also built into the plan. Teachers would be paid approximately $1,400 for their work. Additionally, two staff members at Campus School and McFadden would receive $1,000 stipends to take on extra duties as ESL Lead teachers. Four ESL coaches would also be designated and receive $2,000 stipends for additional professional development work.
Funding for the program is expected to come from Title III federal money. The school system sees this expansion as a way to support families, strengthen community ties, and help bridge language barriers that may hinder student success.
