An analysis of FBI data released in August reveals that among large cities in the U.S., Memphis had the highest violent crime rate in 2024. The city recorded an alarming rate of 2,501 violent incidents per 100,000 residents, more than double Nashville’s rate.

Nashville also ranked notably high nationwide, securing the 13th highest violent crime rate among large U.S. cities. Its rate stood at 1,124 incidents per 100,000 residents.

Despite these concerning figures, there are signs of improvement across Tennessee. The Metro Nashville Police Department reported a 12 percent decrease in violent crime, including a more than 30 percent drop in fatal shootings. Robberies dropped by 25 percent and aggravated assaults are down nearly 11 percent  . Across the state, the murder rate also dropped by 19 percent.

These statistics offer a clearer picture of where different Tennessee cities stand in terms of safety. While Memphis remains the most extreme outlier with its significantly high rate, Nashville’s position reflects serious challenges but also a positive trend toward improved public safety.
