A 12 year old boy is fighting for his life after being shot in the head during a large group altercation in downtown Nashville Sunday night, according to Metro Nashville Police.
The shooting happened just before 7:30 p.m. in the 400 block of Union Street, close to the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. Police say a group of roughly 10 to 15 teenagers had gathered near Union Terrace, apparently to fight, when gunfire broke out in the middle of the confrontation.
Metro PD spokesperson Kris Mumford said the boy was struck in the head and is now in extremely critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Officers were already nearby and heard the shots themselves, allowing them to reach the scene within moments.
Investigators are currently speaking with two people connected to the incident. Mumford said neither of them is believed to be the shooter, and the search for who fired the gun is still active.
Anyone with information about the shooting or the identity of the shooter is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463. Detectives continue to canvass the area and gather statements as the investigation unfolds.
This is a developing story and will be updated as new details emerge.
