A Heat Advisory has been issued for the Nashville area—including Davidson, Williamson, Cheatham, and surrounding counties—on Thursday, July 17, from 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM CDT. During this period, heat index values are expected to soar between 105 °F and 109 °F, thanks to peak temperatures in the mid-90s combined with oppressive humidity. This kind of heat significantly increases the risk for heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, particularly for vulnerable groups like young children, seniors, outdoor workers, and individuals with chronic health conditions.

What This Means and How to Stay Safe

During advisory hours particularly between early afternoon and early evening limit outdoor exposure, especially strenuous activities. If you must be outside, stay in shaded, air-conditioned areas as much as possible. Wear light-colored, loose-fitting, breathable clothing, and don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses for additional protection. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day avoid caffeine or alcohol as they can dehydrate you further.

Smart Planning for the Day

If you’re organizing outdoor events like sports, yard work, or community gatherings consider rescheduling to early morning (before noon) or after 7 PM when temperatures begin to drop. For those working outside or commuting, take frequent breaks in cool environments, and monitor yourself and any co-workers or loved ones for signs of heat stress symptoms like dizziness, nausea, heavy sweating, or weakness. Check on elderly neighbors or friends who might not have access to cool spaces.
