A potentially dangerous situation was averted last Friday morning outside Gladeville Elementary School in Wilson County, Tennessee, when a handgun fell from the back of an SUV during school drop-off. The firearm landed on Stewarts Ferry Pike near a school crossing guard, who swiftly removed it from the roadway, preventing any harm to students or staff. Wilson County Schools commended the quick actions of the crossing guard team and school personnel, noting that surveillance footage confirmed no direct danger to individuals on the school grounds.

Following the incident, the crossing guard team and school staff promptly notified the school resource officer (SRO), who initiated an investigation. The Wilson County Sheriff’s Office is currently looking into the matter to determine how the firearm came to be on the vehicle and whether any laws were violated. While the immediate threat was neutralized, the incident raises concerns about firearm safety and secure storage, especially in areas frequented by children.

The school district emphasized that the safety of students and staff remains a top priority. They are reviewing safety protocols and considering additional measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of securing firearms and being vigilant in school zones to ensure the safety of all individuals.

As the investigation continues, the community is urged to report any suspicious activities or unsecured firearms to local authorities. By working together, residents and officials can help maintain a safe environment for students and staff in Wilson County schools.
