FDA Puts Walmart Shrimp Under Recall After Radiation Concern

The FDA has flagged a safety issue involving frozen shrimp sold at Walmart under the Great Value brand. One shipment from Indonesian supplier BMS Foods tested positive for Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope linked to nuclear activity. While the contaminated shrimp never made it to customers and the radiation levels were below the government’s action threshold, the FDA has decided to recall three specific lot codes as a precaution.

Health experts note that short-term exposure to such low levels is unlikely to cause immediate harm. However, consistent long-term exposure could increase cancer risks. This is why the FDA is taking the situation seriously and why they are also investigating the processing conditions at the supplier’s facility.

As of now, Walmart has removed the products, placed them under investigation, and is offering full refunds for customers who return affected shrimp. The FDA has also placed the Indonesian supplier under import alert, which means future shipments will face heightened scrutiny before entering the United States.

Consumers who purchased Great Value frozen raw shrimp should check the lot codes carefully. If the numbers match the affected codes, the safest step is to discard the shrimp or return it to Walmart for a refund.

Food safety recalls like this can sound alarming, but the quick response from both the FDA and Walmart helps reduce potential risks. For shoppers, the best move is simple: check your freezer, stay informed, and when in doubt, do not eat the product.
