A man is dead after being struck by a train Saturday afternoon while walking along a railroad bridge over the Harpeth River in Nashville.
The incident was reported around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 2. Detectives with the Metro Nashville Police Department responded to the railroad crossing near McCrory Lane and Highway 70 after reports of a pedestrian being hit by a train.
According to investigators, the train conductor said he sounded the horn after spotting the man on the tracks. Authorities said the man then began running across the bridge toward the opposite side. While running, he reportedly dropped an item, stopped to pick it up, and kept moving.
Police said the man was clipped by the train about halfway across the bridge and fell into the Harpeth River below.
The Nashville Fire Department later recovered the man’s body from the water. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The medical examiner is still working to identify the victim. Officials said he appeared to be between 20 and 30 years old.
No additional details have been released, and the investigation remains ongoing.
