A serious accident occurred Monday morning on Interstate 40 East near Mile Marker 264 in Nashville, when a motor home caught fire. The blaze fully closed both lanes of I‑40 East as flames engulfed the vehicle, prompting a swift emergency response. Drivers began cautiously using the shoulders to pass the scene, but TDOT strongly advised motorists to avoid the area entirely due to ongoing safety hazards and anticipated traffic delays  .

Compounding the situation were concurrent bridge inspections in the area, complicating access for fire crews and maintenance personnel. Emergency responders worked closely with Tennessee Department of Transportation teams to control the fire while ensuring the structural integrity of nearby bridges. These extra precautions temporarily slowed the clearance efforts, prolonging the closure and exacerbating morning traffic congestion.

Commuters were urged to seek alternate paths or delay their travels until authorities could reopen the road safely. As of the latest update, investigators were still at the scene inspecting the damaged infrastructure and coordinating fire suppression activities. TDOT pledged to update the public once lanes were cleared and repairs or inspections were complete. Anyone with travel plans along this stretch is encouraged to monitor local updates before heading out.
