On the evening of July 4, the Winchester Police Department responded to a medical emergency at the intersection of Twin Creeks Marina Drive and River Watch Way. Initial assessments revealed that 61‑year‑old John Cobb, a Springfield resident, had unexpectedly collapsed. Detectives quickly determined he had been struck in the back of the head by a bullet—likely from celebratory gunfire into the air during Independence Day festivities  .

Authorities from Winchester PD suspect the round was fired recklessly into the sky between approximately 9:10 and 9:25 p.m. on July 4. They are investigating reports of rifle fire in the area during that timeframe and are urging anyone with information to contact Detective Ryan Fuller or Crimestoppers  .

Initially, medical staff at Vanderbilt University Medical Center pronounced Cobb brain‑dead, and police were notified of his death. However, his wife Michelle clarified to Smokey Barn News that he remains alive and on a ventilator, with vital organs including his heart, lungs, and pancreas functioning. She reported signs of movement and noted the bullet remains lodged in his brain stem. Testing and monitoring continue as the family prays for his recovery  .

The case stands as a stark warning about the hidden dangers of celebratory gunfire. Even when bullets are fired straight up, they return to earth at dangerous speeds—just enough to cause lethal head injuries. Winchester detectives emphasized the criminal risk, reminding the public that such reckless behavior can amount to homicide charges. The investigation remains active, and tips from community members may be crucial in locating those responsible
