Updated guidance on who should get the covid shot

Published on

This fall the guidance for who should get the updated Covid-19 vaccine is changing. The Food and Drug Administration has approved newer versions of the vaccine from Moderna, Pfizer, and Novavax. All three are recommended for people 65 years and older. They are also advised for younger individuals who have medical conditions that increase their risk of severe illness from Covid.

For younger age groups there are differences in which vaccine is suggested. Moderna is accepted for people six months to 64 years old with underlying health risks. Pfizer is for people five to 64 years old with those risks. Novavax is for ages 12 to 64 who have a high risk condition.

Some states may require a prescription to receive the new vaccine under this guidance. Tennessee is not currently one of those states. Supply appears stable this season, but insurance coverage is uncertain for those not in one of the risk groups.

If someone is not officially included in the recommended group but still wants the vaccine they likely can still receive it. However they might need to pay out of pocket. It is advised they check with their insurance provider or talk with a pharmacist or doctor to know what cost or coverage might apply.
