University approves Turning Point USA chapter

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga has officially approved Turning Point USA as a Registered Student Organization on its campus. Earlier in the week, the Student Government Association had voted against recommending that the chapter be recognized, but the university’s leadership moved forward with the approval.

Turning Point USA is a national organization co-founded by Charlie Kirk and it already has over 300 chapters on college campuses across the United States.  The university stated that recognition of student groups is governed by policy from the Dean of Students and the Chancellor, in compliance with state law.

In the official announcement, the Dean of Students’ Office said it had reviewed the application submitted by a group of students and determined that Turning Point USA met the criteria for recognition under university rules.  The university emphasized that, while the Student Government Association may express opinions, final authority for recognition lies with the Dean and the Chancellor according to policy and law.

Following the decision, Governor Bill Lee publicly congratulated the university on approving the chapter, framing it as support for free inquiry and civil debate.  His endorsement also highlighted the broader national presence and ambitions of Turning Point USA within academic institutions.
