A child has died after a man opened fire on five children and their mother in North Nashville, according to Metro Police.

The shooting happened Sunday night around 10 p.m. at a home on Westchester Drive. Police say the suspect, 26-year-old Cortez Martin, shot his 33-year-old girlfriend and her five children inside a Dodge minivan. The victims were visiting family from Iowa.

One of the children, a 13-year-old boy, died from his injuries. The mother and the four remaining children, ages 8 to 16, were taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Police say some remain in critical condition.

Martin was taken into custody without incident and is facing several charges, including criminal homicide and attempted homicide. Detectives are continuing their investigation.
