A rest area along Interstate 40 has been closed after a fire broke out in one of its restrooms, according to the Tennessee Department of Transportation. The facility in Dickson County, specifically the westbound rest area at mile marker 170, will remain closed until further notice. 

The fire originated in the women’s restroom and, despite being described as “small,” it caused extensive damage to the building’s structure and interior. The extent of the damage forced officials to shutter the rest area immediately to allow for assessment and repairs. 

At this time, TDOT has not provided a timeline for reopening the rest area. Officials say it will stay closed until they are confident that restoration can be done safely and that all systems meet required standards. 

Motorists who usually use that rest stop are asked to plan accordingly and use alternate facilities. TDOT may post updates as repairs progress and once the rest area is ready to reopen.
