I-40 Remains closed after semi overturns near downtown Nashville

Early on Friday morning, a serious accident involving a tractor-trailer disrupted traffic at the busy I‑24/I‑40 interchange in Davidson County, Nashville. According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), the semi-truck veered off the eastbound I‑40, tumbling down an embankment before crashing into the westbound lanes around mile marker 211. The crash occurred near prominent downtown exits, including Nissan Stadium and Fessler’s Lane, sending debris across the roadway and triggering immediate diversions on I‑24 westbound.

Complications mounted when the trailer, which was transporting electrical parts like transformers, began leaking oil upon overturning. Nashville Fire Department Hazmat teams rapidly responded to manage the situation, containing around 150 gallons of spillage that included diesel fuel. Fortunately, the semi driver suffered only minor injuries and was promptly taken to a hospital following the incident.

By mid-morning on July 11, the crash site was still under cleanup. TDOT crews continued working to clear debris and manage traffic. Initial estimates projected full reopening near noon; however, by 11:25 a.m., the agency revised the expected clearance to around 3 p.m. due to the volume of wreckage strewn across lanes. Motorists were advised to use alternate routes to avoid the prolonged congestion.

This collision at a crucial junction into downtown Nashville highlights the potential dangers of hazardous material spills close to key urban arteries. While the driver’s status was not deemed life-threatening, the incident underscored ongoing challenges in responding to major roadway incidents involving heavy vehicles. TDOT and first responders maintained full operations well into the afternoon to ensure both cleanup and traffic flow restoration continued steadily.
