Fatal shooting outside Bridgestone Arena sparks self-defense investigation

NASHVILLE — A 23-year-old man was fatally shot early Saturday outside Bridgestone Arena, as the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) looks into a claim of self-defense.

Police say the incident began around 2:20 a.m. on Oct. 18, when the victim, identified as Adrian Rivas‑Romo, was involved in an argument over a fare with pedicab driver Christopher Jones, 21.

According to the MNPD, Rivas-Romo and his friends were returning to their hotel using two pedicabs when they stopped outside the arena. Jones, who was also heading in the same direction, got involved. Police say Jones refused to drive the group further and the situation escalated into a physical altercation. Jones told officers that he was punched in the back of the head by one of Rivas-Romo’s friends.

Jones called 911 and remained at the scene, identifying himself as the shooter. His pistol was recovered by police.  He told investigators that Rivas-Romo rushed toward him, prompting him to fire. Rivas-Romo was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The MNPD is continuing the investigation with the support of the District Attorney’s Office, and potential charges are under review.
