East Nashville on Lockdown: Suspect Barricades After Firing at Police

Published on

A tense standoff is unfolding in East Nashville Monday morning after a suspect fired at Metro Nashville police officers and then barricaded himself inside an apartment.

Officers were called to the area of South 5th Street and Sylvan Street just after 5:30 a.m. when shots were fired in their direction. Fortunately, no officers or bystanders were reported injured in the incident.

The suspect retreated into a nearby apartment and has refused to come out. MNPD negotiators arrived on scene to work toward a peaceful resolution, and SWAT units were spotted pulling up to the building around 7:30 a.m.

The heavy police presence has shut down several roads in the area. The Interstate 24 West exit ramp at Shelby Avenue was also closed, according to the Tennessee Department of Transportation. Metro police are urging residents and drivers to avoid the area while the situation remains active.
