The Metro Council in Nashville recently passed a resolution to commemorate the life and legacy of Grammy-winning songwriter Brett James. During its Thursday night session, councilmembers spoke of James’s contributions to music and affirmed that his name and accomplishments would hold a permanent place in the city’s history.

James tragically lost his life last month along with his wife and stepdaughter in a small plane crash in North Carolina. The flight had departed from John C. Tune Airport on September 18 and went down a few hours later, leaving no survivors among the three aboard.

Best known for co-writing country hits such as Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus Take the Wheel” and Kenny Chesney’s “Out Last Night,” James also held a place of honor in the Nashville songwriting community. He had been inducted into the Nashville Songwriters’ Hall of Fame, reflecting his long-standing influence and creative service to the industry.

Councilmembers noted that this resolution ensures future generations will remember James not just for his tragic death but for the artistry he shared. They emphasized that Nashville’s musical heritage is richer because of work he left behind.
